I have a pair of teddy bear hamsters aged 8 months and had babies when they reached 6 1/2 months. She gave birth to 6 babies but I think the normal number is lesser right? And how come when I isolated her from her mate that she tried to eat them and I was thinking that she was just cleaning them until she placed the 3 babies in her mouth. Finally she ate all of them? How come? And 3 days after they mated again, now she is on her 24th day gestation. She's getting bigger. I already isolated her before she gives birth. That's good right? Hope to here from you. thanks.

Actually the average number of pups for a Syrian hamster is 8, but they can have more or less. As for the mother eating her pups, the best thing you can do is reduce the stress on the mother as much as possible, and it sounds like you're doing that. If this was her first time having pups then it's not unusual for her to get a little freaked out and eat her pups. Hopefully it'll go better her second time around.

Hi Adam,

Thanks for the response. Right now I'm still waiting for her to give birth. Is there such a thing for an obese hamster? I think mine is. Their gestation is 16 days right? the last time they mate was december 19, how come she still on her way? thanks again. By the way both are already about 7 inches long.
