Do hamsters get hernias? My son's dwarf hamster (female) is about 4 months old and for the last week or so has a swollen/very red area on its underside. Looks like something is protruding near the rectum. Demeanor, activity, eating and drinking is normal, but not sure what this could be? Anyone familiar with this or additional information would be helpful.
hi i thought i would reply to u as my hamster had a simalar problem but mine was a syrian hamster , he was about 7 month's old and i know this sounds stupid but his back end (bum) got quite large he was eating and playing as normal i took him to vet but they said there was nothing they could do!!! unfortualy lenny died 4 weeks later and i still believe the vet was wrong,im still trying to find out what was wrong ,hope ur wee hammy get beter soon though!
Just to echo Lynnie's comment, you definitely want to take your hamsterto a vet and make sure you get a satisfactory answer. It could be any number of things so you really want to get a professional opinion.
The problem cleared up on its own. We did take the hamster to the Vet to be checked, yet all seemed to be ok. Vet said sometimes the genitals (male or female) can prolapse (?) and protrude outside the body. Not sure what happened with ours yet all is ok for now.
