Hamsters have large cheek pouches that are primarily used for carrying hamster food from its source to a safe place, usually hidden under the bedding near the nest. Caution has to be taken in deciding what to give hamsters to eat, as they'll stuff the food inside these cheek pouches. Not only do you not want to give them something that could make them ill, but you need to keep in mind that the insides of their cheeks are very delicate and can be damaged by the wrong snack. You also need to avoid any kind of substance, food or otherwise, that swells when exposed to moisture as this could cause your hamster's pouches to become impacted. With that in mind, also remember that although general statements can be made about what is and isn’t good for a hamster to eat, they all have their individual personalities and not every hamster will enjoy the same hamster food. You may also be under the impression that your hamster is interested only in seeds, fruits, and veggies – not true! In the wild hamsters will quite happily snack on a passing insect or two and have also been known to munch on any carrion they may come across. This doesn't mean that you have to head into your back yard and begin hunting crickets (although it’s great exercise!); there are plenty of store-bought options to feed your hamster that will fully satisfy his dietary needs. However, if you wish to augment his regular meals with some fresh fruit, veggies, and the occasional bug or two he’ll thank you for it!
